Artist Stephen Spears grew up as a military brat, living in exotic locations for short periods of time. His work has been influenced by his early experiences living in the Orient, among other places. Creating artwork has always been an important part of his life.
His life-long love for animals shines through in his wildlife sculpture. Stephen is a champion of endangered species, and enjoys promoting awareness about various animals and their habitats.
Family is a major focus in Stephens life. He lives with his wife, daughter, son and a variety of pets. Stephen's daughter has inspired his recent foray into sculpting children. Resulting in a number of commissions for life size sculptures.
Stephen's medium of choice is bronze. I welcome the challenge of bringing the illusion of movement, a variety of textures, and a feeling of warmth to an essentially cold, still piece of metal. It's exciting to bring the metal to life, to create a story with my bare hands.
Stephen's work allows us to enjoy the humor and joy of life the way he does. He also provides a glimpse into the soul of his subjects. We see an honesty we might not of been aware of before.
